OpenAI has made it possible to use the artificial intelligence (AI) coding tool "Codex" on smartphones.
OpenAI said on the 14th (local time) that it has added Codex to the ChatGPT mobile app.
Until now, developers had to remotely access a computer or carry a laptop powered on to use Codex. Because of this, they had to keep a laptop slightly open to maintain power even when moving or doing other tasks so work would not be interrupted.
Such scenes of developers spread like a kind of meme. OpenAI also joined the trend by posting photos of half-open laptops on a copier, a car's passenger seat, a beach, a washing machine, and a toilet on its social media (SNS) X account.
On X, OpenAI said, "Step away from your laptop for a moment. Keep using Codex on your phone. Your Codex workspace fits in your pocket."
Using Codex through the mobile app keeps files, credentials, and permissions on the laptop, while terminal output, test results, and code change history are sent to the smartphone in real time. A remote secure access feature has also been added, allowing smartphones to access Codex on company servers that previously could be reached only by laptop.
OpenAI said, "Start work on your desktop and check progress on your smartphone, so you can keep working without being tied to a single device."
The Codex feature in the ChatGPT app will be provided first to Apple Mac computer users and later expanded to Windows users. The smartphone operating systems supported are Apple iOS and Android OS.
