It was found that among two people who used generative artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time last year, one did so for everyday information searches.
On the 15th, the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) said in its recently released "Generative AI user group analysis" report that among 1,346 respondents who were "new users" of Generative AI last year, 46.4% answered that their main purpose was "for everyday information searches." Answers that they started using it for work (20.9%), hobbies (14.9%), schoolwork such as assignments (14.9%), and everyday conversations (4.1%) followed.
Half of the new users were in their 40s and 50s. People in their 50s (26.1%) and 40s (23.6%) accounted for high shares. They were followed by those in their 30s (15.9%), 20s (18%), teens (8.6%), and 60s (6.9%).
Continuing users, who kept using Generative AI in 2025 following 2024, were largely in their 20s and 30s. Among 616 continuing users, those in their 20s accounted for 32.5% and those in their 30s 27.1%. Continuing users also most often said their primary purpose for using Generative AI was everyday information searches, at 35.7%. They were followed by work (27.9%), schoolwork such as assignments (20.6%), hobbies (11.4%), and everyday conversations (4.4%).
Both continuing users (93.7%) and new users (94.3%) mainly used ChatGPT as their primary service.
These results are based on responses to Generative AI-related survey items from 8,002 individual respondents who took part in the 2024–2025 Korea Media Panel Survey, which the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) analyzed.
