Samsung Electronics said on the 14th that it signed the European Union (EU) Code of Conduct for Energy Smart Appliances (CoC), becoming the first domestic corporations to do so.
The EU CoC is a voluntary agreement program led by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) under the European Commission that encourages home appliance manufacturers to develop and expand the distribution of high-efficiency energy smart appliances. By strengthening the linkage between smart appliances and power management systems, it aims to respond more flexibly to energy demand, such as dispersing demand during peak hours when electricity use is concentrated.
Through this signing, Samsung Electronics laid the groundwork to expand energy cooperation with power companies across Europe. The EU encourages power companies to promote energy-saving cooperation with appliance manufacturers that have signed the EU CoC. Samsung Electronics has partnered with major European energy corporations such as British Gas in the United Kingdom and Coolblue in the Netherlands to offer electricity bill savings benefits, and plans to further expand energy cooperation going forward.
Samsung Electronics' all-in-one washer-dryers, washing machines, and dishwashers met EU CoC standards and were registered as Energy Smart Appliances (ESA) in the "EU energy label registration system" (EPREL). These products are linked to the power grid and feature "custom reservation," which suggests using the appliance during off-peak hours.
The EU discloses information on high-efficiency appliances through EPREL. Starting in Mar., it enabled users to search and check products linked to the power grid that can optimize energy use by categorizing them as "energy smart appliances." Some European countries are also running policies that provide subsidies or tax benefits focused on high-efficiency, energy-saving smart appliances registered in EPREL.
Samsung Electronics is strengthening AI appliance competitiveness by introducing a variety of high-efficiency energy models in the European market. Last month, it released the "Bespoke AI dishwasher," which reduces energy use by up to an additional 20% compared with the top A grade in European energy efficiency. In June, it will launch the "Bespoke AI washing machine," which reduces energy use by up to an additional 65% compared with the top A grade in European energy efficiency. These products feature "custom reservation," and after a cycle ends, they provide information such as time spent and energy use in graphs to help manage energy systematically. If users set "AI saving mode," refrigerators can cut energy use by up to 15%, washing machines by up to 70%, and air conditioners by up to 30%.
Yang Hye-sun, vice president of the Digital Appliances Division at Samsung Electronics, said, "This signing is an example that shows Samsung Electronics' competitiveness in high-efficiency technology and its efforts to expand the energy-saving ecosystem," adding, "Based on this, we will further expand energy cooperation with various power companies in Europe."
