Although the U.S. Ministry of National Defense (War Department) decided to oust Anthropic, the company's artificial intelligence (AI) model "Mythos" is reportedly being adopted.
Emil Michael, Vice Minister for research and engineering at the Ministry of National Defense and chief technology officer (CTO), said so at a conference held in Washington, D.C., Reuters reported on the 12th (local time).
In January, Anthropic clashed with the U.S. Ministry of National Defense after urging limits to prevent its AI from being used for autonomous lethal weapons or large-scale civilian surveillance. After that, U.S. President Donald Trump decided to expel Anthropic's AI from the federal government, and the Ministry of National Defense designated Anthropic as a "supply chain risk corporation," the first among U.S. corporations.
Regarding the Ministry of National Defense's contradictory actions, Vice Minister Michael said, "The Mythos issue is a grave moment for national security." He added that Mythos has specialized capabilities for finding and patching cyber vulnerabilities, and that the Ministry of National Defense adopted it to strengthen network security.
Michael added that cyber vulnerabilities themselves have existed for a long time, but with the advent of AI models like Mythos, those vulnerabilities could be exploited more quickly and, at the same time, remediated more swiftly.
However, Vice Minister Michael said Anthropic's technological edge is only temporary, adding that AI models from OpenAI, xAI and Google could offer capabilities at a similar level. The three corporations Michael mentioned have all signed contracts allowing the Ministry of National Defense and the military to use their AI models for classified work.
