Dario Amodei, 43, chief executive officer (CEO) of Anthropic, said the company's growth is outpacing expectations and that it is going all out to meet surging computing demand.
According to CNBC, CEO Amodei said at an event in San Francisco on the 6th (local time), "We expected 10x growth this year, but we're actually seeing an 80x growth rate." On the company's steep trajectory, he said, "I hope this pace doesn't continue," adding it is "hard to manage."
Anthropic rapidly expanded its business as its artificial intelligence (AI) model Claude and coding tool "Claude Code" gained popularity. As of last month, Anthropic's annual recurring revenue (ARR) topped $30 billion (about 44 trillion won), more than tripling from $9 billion at the end of last year. Preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) this year, Anthropic is discussing new funding at a valuation of about $900 billion (about 1,336 trillion won). If the deal goes through, it is expected to surpass OpenAI's valuation of $852 billion (about 1,264 trillion won).
Amodei said the company ran into a shortage of computing resources because it grew more rapidly than expected. He added that it is speeding up efforts to secure compute. On the day, Anthropic announced it would use compute from the "Colossus 1" data center in Memphis, Tennessee, owned by xAI, the AI subsidiary of SpaceX led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Through the deal, it secured 300 megawatts of compute, including more than 220,000 of Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs).
Anthropic said the deal allowed it to double usage limits for paying users of the "Claude Code" coding tool. Amodei said, "We're moving quickly to provide sufficient compute, like with the deal with SpaceX."
