Samsung Display said on the 29th that its TriFold won the "Display of the Year" award. TriFold is a smartphone panel that folds twice.
Display of the Year is the most prestigious among the "Display Industry Awards" (DIA) given annually by the Society for Information Display (SID). It is awarded to innovative displays among products released last year. The awards ceremony will take place at Display Week 2026, the world's largest display exhibition, which opens May 3 in Los Angeles, California.
SID said, "TriFold is a new form factor designed for the mobile artificial intelligence (AI) era, delivering powerful performance and remarkable portability at the same time," adding, "The immersive 10-inch large screen has opened new possibilities for productivity, creativity and entertainment." It added, "By applying advanced materials, we maintained thickness while reinforcing the durability of the dual-folding structure."
The TriFold display, which Samsung Display began mass-producing in earnest in September last year, has a total module thickness of 0.44 mm. It is the thinnest among Samsung Display's foldable panels.
It uses MONT Flex, Samsung Display's latest foldable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. Internal folding tests found that even after folding and unfolding the panel 500,000 times (at room temperature), the screen showed no issues. Internal evaluations showed that the slip phenomenon appearing on the panel cross-section increased by up to 1.6 times on the TriFold compared with single-fold products. Samsung Display overcame these durability challenges by developing a new adhesive and optimizing stress-dispersion design.
A Samsung Display official said, "Foldable panels, which are made of multiple thin-film layers, can exhibit a slip phenomenon in which the vertical alignment of the panel cross-section between layers becomes distorted during repeated folding and unfolding," adding, "Because TriFold has two folding axes on a single screen, more stress is applied to the panel, making it a product that requires advanced technological capabilities."
Starting with a 5.68-inch flexible OLED in 2014, Samsung Display has now won its eighth "Display of the Year." In the foldable display category, it recorded its third win following 2020 and 2022.
Lee Ho-jung, head of product planning for the small and medium display business at Samsung Display (executive vice president), said, "With this award, Samsung Display's leading technological prowess in the foldable market has once again been recognized," adding, "In particular, by commercializing the world's first multi in-folding display that folds inward twice, we reaffirmed the potential to expand the foldable market through a new form factor."
