Kim Ju-young, CEO of AI Semiconductor startup HyperAccel, received a decoration in the commendations for "Information and Communications Day 2026," organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, in recognition of innovations in semiconductor technology specialized for LLM inference.
Kim, a KAIST professor and former Microsoft data center accelerator designer, has developed a proprietary architecture since founding the company in 2023 to address the high cost and high power consumption of GPU-centric AI infrastructure. The award reflects high marks for presenting a semiconductor architecture optimized for LLM inference that goes beyond the limits of conventional GPU-centric AI infrastructure.
Kim, a KAIST professor and system architecture expert, founded HyperAccel in 2023 based on experience leading data center accelerator design at Microsoft. Since then, the company has developed the AI Semiconductor "LPU (LLM Processing Unit)" specialized for LLM inference, presenting a next-generation AI infrastructure architecture.
The LPU developed by HyperAccel is based on a Streamlined Dataflow architecture that fundamentally redesigns the computation and memory access patterns of LLM inference. This maximizes memory bandwidth utilization and, by using LPDDR5X low-power memory, aims to lower data center power consumption and total cost of ownership (TCO) at the same time.
HyperAccel has completed ASIC development using Samsung Foundry's 4nm process and is targeting about 3 times better power efficiency and more than 10 times better expense efficiency compared with GPUs.
The award comprehensively recognized contributions such as achieving domestic technological self-reliance through innovative AI Semiconductor development, implementing high-efficiency AI servers, fostering an AI Semiconductor ecosystem, expanding demand-linked R&D, and cultivating advanced talent in semiconductor design and system software.
Academically, the company has demonstrated successive results at major global conferences and technology competitions, including the ACM/IEEE DAC 2023 Best Presentation Award, the IEEE MICRO 2024 Best Paper Award, IC Taiwan Grand Challenge 2025 Winner, and Extreme Tech Challenge 2025 Finalist in the United States.
CEO Kim Ju-young said, "This award recognizes not only HyperAccel's technological prowess but also the growth potential of the domestic AI Semiconductor industry," adding, "We will do our best to present a new standard optimized for LLM inference beyond the conventional GPU-centric architecture and to ensure that Korea's technology spreads globally."
