Samsung Electronics said its global smart home platform SmartThings has significantly strengthened interoperability with 25 new smart home products from Ikea. Based on the application of the Matter standard, devices can now connect directly without a separate hub, lowering the entry barrier to smart homes.
It said the 25 new products, including a scroll wheel remote launched earlier this month, smart bulbs, plugs, and sensors for temperature and humidity, air quality, motion, doors, and leaks, adopt the Thread-based Matter standard. Previously, users had to connect through Ikea's dedicated hub and then double-connect to the SmartThings hub, but now they can link directly to the SmartThings hub, it added. It also said integrated control is now possible not only with Samsung Electronics appliances such as TVs, air conditioners, and washing machines, but also with a wide range of branded devices registered with SmartThings.
It emphasized that usability has also expanded. Through door sensors, users can check parents' daily activities based on door open and close data, and by linking with the SmartThings Family Care service, they can understand living patterns even from a distance, it explained. Using air quality and temperature-humidity sensors, the system analyzes carbon dioxide concentration and illuminance to provide a "sleep environment report," and it also offers customized guidance such as temperature control. It added that users can implement automation features such as automatically activating air conditioner dehumidification mode when humidity rises and sending instant alerts when a leak is detected.
From a user experience perspective, it presented the scroll wheel remote as a representative example. Linked with lighting, users can precisely adjust brightness and color temperature by turning the wheel, and it said the device can also be used for equipment requiring fine control, such as blinds.
Samsung Electronics said it is accelerating the expansion of the Matter-based smart home ecosystem by adopting Thread 1.4 ahead of others. It emphasized its technological leadership in securing connectivity that breaks down boundaries between brands and communication standards through a low-power, short-range network.
Jeong Jae-yeon, vice president of the SmartThings team at Samsung Electronics, said, "By connecting Ikea devices to SmartThings, users can enjoy an intuitive smart home experience while reducing initial expense," and added, "We will expand partnerships to build an integrated ecosystem that is not bound by brands or standards."
