Design is all about understanding context, and Canva AI stands out from AI corporations' design tools in that it grasps what users want to make, narrows the gap that arises when turning ideas into finished outputs, and boosts work productivity.
Cameron Adams, Canva co-founder and chief product officer (CPO), said this in a written interview with ChosunBiz on the 17th. Addressing concerns that AI-based design tools recently unveiled by Google and Anthropic will replace existing design software, Adams said, "There are many impressive AI tools, but most focus on brainstorming or setting a starting point and do not solve the entire journey to the final output."
Creative work spans from ideation to research, actual design, editing and revision, and completion of the final output, but major AI tools focus only on the first step, he said. "Existing AI tools make follow-up work like editing difficult, so using them often results in one-off designs," he said. "If you want revisions, you have to start over from scratch, and users end up trapped in the cycle of repeatedly entering prompts (instructions)."
He emphasized that Canva's "Canva AI 2.0," unveiled on the 16th (local time), is differentiated from existing AI tools in that it integrates and manages design work end to end, shortens work time, and dramatically improves efficiency. Adams said, "'Canva AI 2.0' is the most important innovation in the company's history," adding, "With this, Canva has begun its shift from a 'design platform equipped with AI tools' to an 'AI platform equipped with design tools.'"
Canva, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, is a design software corporation used by 265 million people in 190 countries. Positioning itself as a platform that makes it easy to produce a variety of graphic designs and visual content for presentations, résumés, websites, and social media (SNS) posts, Canva has built a solid user base. Last year, annual recurring revenue (ARR) was about $4 billion (about 5.94 trillion won), up 40% from a year earlier. Among all users, paid subscribers reached 31 million. As an unlisted company, Canva's corporate value is estimated at $100 billion (about 148 trillion won), the largest among tech startups born in Australia.
Canva is drawing attention because it moved quickly to adopt AI for the AI era. According to the leading Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Canva is the third most-used Generative AI platform in the world after ChatGPT and Gemini. a16z said, "Canva has built a growth engine around its suite of AI tools, the 'Magic Suite,'" and evaluated it as "a representative case of successfully transitioning from a software corporation to an AI corporation."
While concerns are rising that the industry will take a major hit as AI-based design tools such as Google's Stitch gain prominence and share prices of major design software corporations like Adobe and Figma fall, some analysts say Canva moved swiftly to pivot to AI and secured defensibility. The market view is that while Canva cannot be completely free from the SaaSpocalypse (software end-times) threat triggered by AI, it has held its own relatively well.
Adams co-founded Canva in 2013 with Canva CEO Melanie Perkins and COO Cliff Obrecht. A former Google employee, Adams oversees product design and strategy at Canva.
Regarding the Korean market, he said, "It is one of the fastest-growing markets and one of the most 'design-friendly' in the world," adding, "K-culture has now established itself as a new standard." He added, "Korean users are trend-sensitive and quick to adopt new technologies, so Korea also aligns with where design should head in the AI era," and said, "We will expand investment so Canva can become the creative partner of Korean corporations, students, startups, and creators." The following is a Q&A with Adams.
—What is "Canva AI 2.0," which was recently launched?
"'Canva AI 2.0' goes beyond simply producing designs to serve as a conversational agent platform that supports the entire workflow of creative work. If you enter a prompt (instruction) in natural language in the chat window, Canva AI automatically handles everything from design generation to edits on behalf of the user and manages schedules by understanding the context of the work based on emails or meeting materials. Because every step from planning to interim revisions to final output is seamlessly connected, it can boost the speed and quality of creation. In short, as long as you have an idea, anyone can easily produce a finished output—your 'creative partner in your pocket.'
We are confident that 'Canva AI 2.0' is the biggest leap in changes that have occurred in design over the past 10 years and Canva's most important innovation. This is the starting point of a fundamental shift as Canva is reorganized from a 'design platform layered with AI tools' to an 'AI-based platform equipped with design tools.'"
—You said it is the world's only model that understands the essence of design. What do you mean?
"While AI has advanced rapidly in writing, coding, and reasoning, design has remained one of the tougher areas to solve. That is because beyond visually pleasing designs, one must understand the countless elements and the production and editing processes that go into completing a design—something existing AI corporations have found difficult to implement.
Canva has focused for years on building the foundation to understand the essence of design. 'Canva AI 2.0' is built on the 'Canva Design Model,' a design-specialized AI model that Canva developed in-house and launched in Oct. last year. We trained the model using the vast trove of design data accumulated on the Canva platform over the past 14 years. It does not just learn "good-looking design," but learns the production process that captures how core design components—layout, hierarchy, typography, color, and alignment—harmonize and change. That is why every output generated by 'Canva AI 2.0' is delivered in a form that users can fine-tune and edit."
—What does it mean that AI understands "intent" and "imagination"?
"Historically, creative activity has not been hard due to a lack of imagination. People know what they want to make, but the gap between an idea and a finished output becomes the obstacle. 'Canva AI 2.0' solves the problem by narrowing this gap.
Canva focused on the prompts users enter when engaging in creative work. For example, with the request "Make me slides," it is hard to tell whether the user wants a rough framework or a highly polished presentation. We invested in "intent routing" to determine what users are actually asking for.
In design, understanding context is paramount. Canva AI correctly interprets user intent, carries out the necessary tasks, and, over time, learns users' styles and preferences to generate customized designs that fit the characteristics of the user or brand even without explicit instructions."
—There are concerns that AI-based tools like Google's "Nano Banana" are encroaching on the space of existing design platforms.
"Many impressive AI tools have been released recently, but most zero in on brainstorming or finding a starting point. They do not, however, address the entire journey from idea implementation to final output. Canva is differentiated in that it provides an end-to-end solution that spans the entire creative process.
Many AI tools still only generate flat images that make follow-up work difficult. If you want to make changes, you have to start again from scratch, and users end up trapped in the cycle of repeatedly entering prompts. In Canva, users can freely move between AI generation and direct editing, and iterate to refine outputs with precision. A collaborative environment where multiple people can work easily in real time is also a strength unique to Canva that other AI tools lack."
—Canva is used in more than 190 countries. What are the characteristics and growth potential of the Korean market?
"Korea is one of the fastest-growing markets for Canva and one of the most 'design-friendly' in the world. K-culture has now moved beyond global spread to establish itself as a new standard. Korean users are trend-sensitive and quick to adopt new technologies. So Korea is also a market that well illustrates where design should head in the AI era.
Over the past year alone, more than 90 million designs were created in Korea. Among them, presentations (PPT), social media (SNS) posts, posters, videos, and documents were the most popular types. Korea also ranks among the global leaders in AI-based code generation through "Canva Code," and is ahead in terms of AI utilization. Going forward, Canva plans to expand related partnerships and investment to become the core creativity partner for Korean corporations, startups, students, and creators."
—The market expects an initial public offering (IPO). What are your plans?
"We have not finalized a specific IPO timeline, and for now we are not in a hurry. We will pursue a listing when we judge the timing to be optimal."
