Domestic reading platform kt Millie Seojae (hereinafter Millie's library) said on the 14th that it will present writer Cheon Seon-ran's novel "A Thousand Blues" as an original webtoon.
"A Thousand Blues" is a work that portrays the friendship and solidarity among a humanoid that gained self-awareness due to human error, a sick racehorse, and a solitary girl. It won the grand prize at the 2019 Korea Science Fiction Award.
It is also a hit on Millie's library, with a cumulative 170,000 "added to shelf" counts.
Millie's library explained the background for deciding to adapt it into a webtoon, saying, "We determined that the original's unique, warm comfort that drew broad empathy from numerous readers aligns with the 'deep narrative' pursued by original webtoons."
It added, "We will visually reinterpret the emotion of the original and provide readers with a differentiated experience."
Millie's library plans to continue to raise awareness of its webtoon service by offering proprietary content based on original intellectual property (IP) with solid fan bases. In particular, starting with "A Thousand Blues," it will continue adapting outstanding literary works into webtoons and unveil 20 original webtoons within the year. Focusing on narrative-centered drama genres, it will also work to secure large, screen-friendly IP.
Lee Myeong-u, head of the Story Business Division at Millie's library, said, "It is meaningful to present 'A Thousand Blues,' cited by many readers as a novel of their lives, as a Millie's library original webtoon," adding, "By combining the original's deep narrative with the visual delight of webtoons, we expect to deliver a new form of emotion to readers."
