Nvidia formed a partnership with the U.S. semiconductor corporations Marvell Technology (Marvell) and invested $2 billion (about 3 trillion won).
On the 31st (local time), Marvell said, "Through Nvidia's "NVLink Fusion" technology, we have signed a strategic partnership to consolidate Marvell with the Nvidia AI Factory and the artificial intelligence (AI)-radio access network (RAN) ecosystem," adding that Nvidia invested $2 billion in the company.
Marvell also said it plans to collaborate with Nvidia on "silicon photonics," known as optical semiconductor technology. Silicon photonics is a technology that sends and receives data with light instead of electricity, which can maximize data transfer speeds and power efficiency.
Matt Murphy, Marvell chair and chief executive officer (CEO), said, "This partnership reflects the growing importance of high-speed consolidation, optical interconnects, and accelerated infrastructure for AI expansion."
Earlier, Marvell last month completed a transaction to acquire Celestial AI, which has photonic interconnect technology that uses light instead of electrical signals to assist data consolidation between chips and memory semiconductors, for $3.3 billion.
Nvidia has been significantly expanding its business beyond graphics processing units (GPUs) after acquiring Mellanox, which had network technology, for $6.9 billion in 2019.
In Dec. last year, it made a $20 billion (about 29 trillion won) technology license deal related to inference-only AI chips with the startup Groq and effectively acquired the company by extensively hiring core personnel including the founders.
