Lisa Su, AMD chief executive officer (CEO), is said to be visiting Korea to discuss cooperation with Samsung Electronics and Naver, among others. AMD is the No. 2 player in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip market by share, following Nvidia.
According to the industry on the 11th, CEO Su is reportedly planning to visit Korea on the 18th. It will be her first visit since becoming AMD CEO in 2014. CEO Su is expected to meet Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and has also been confirmed to meet Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon to discuss building AI infrastructure.
AMD, along with Nvidia and Intel, is regarded as a big spender in the memory semiconductor industry. It is also said to be in talks with Samsung Electronics' foundry (contract chip manufacturing) division over orders for AI chips.
CEO Su is expected to visit Korea and meet the chairman to discuss the supply of memory semiconductors, including high bandwidth memory (HBM), and foundry orders. Samsung Electronics has supplied AMD with general-purpose DRAM, HBM, and NAND flash memory.
At the meeting with Naver, discussions are expected to cover A-chips for data centers and building infrastructure centered on them. A Naver Cloud official said, "A meeting between CEO Choi Soo-yeon and CEO Lisa Su is scheduled," but added, "It is still difficult to disclose detailed agendas."
