Nvidia said on the 10th (local time) that it will invest in a startup founded by the former OpenAI chief technology officer (CTO).
Thinking Machines Lab, a startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, signed a multi-year deal with Nvidia and plans to adopt the next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) chip "Vera Rubin" system at a scale of at least 1 gigawatt (GW).
1 GW is comparable to the power generation capacity of one nuclear power plant and enough to supply electricity to 1 million households. Thinking Machines Lab is expected to begin using Nvidia's Vera Rubin early next year.
Nvidia said it also made a large-scale investment in Thinking Machines Lab, but did not disclose specifics such as the size or structure of the investment.
Thinking Machines Lab provides tools that allow AI models to be customized (fine-tuned) to the work of major corporations, institutions, and laboratories.
Jensen Huang, Nvidia chief executive officer (CEO), said, "AI is the most powerful tool for knowledge discovery in human history," and "Thinking Machines Lab has assembled a world-class team to advance the frontiers of AI."
Founder Murati said, "This collaboration will enhance our ability to enable users to build AI themselves and make it their own," adding, "This is ultimately the process of shaping human potential,"
Founder Murati served as CTO at OpenAI and briefly served as interim CEO in 2023 when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was temporarily removed by the board. She left the company in 2024 to start Thinking Machines Lab, and in July last year, about a year later, it was valued at $12 billion (about 18 trillion won).
