The labor union at Samsung Electronics will hold a vote on whether to take industrial action starting on the 9th, aiming for a general strike in May.
The Samsung Electronics union joint struggle headquarters said on the 5th that it will conduct a vote on industrial action from the 9th to the 18th and plans to secure the right to strike in mid-month.
If a majority of all union members vote in favor and the right to strike is secured, the union plans to escalate its actions in stages, with a rally of all members in April followed by a general strike in May.
The joint struggle headquarters said, "With a general strike in May as the goal, we plan to continuously expand the number of participants in the dispute and increase pressure on management."
Earlier, the joint struggle headquarters formed a joint bargaining team last November with the Early Enterprise Labor Union Samsung Electronics Branch, the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union, and the Samsung Electronics Union Donghaeng, and has engaged in wage talks with management for about three months.
However, as differences between labor and management over abolishing the cap on performance bonuses remained unresolved, the union declared a breakdown in talks on the 19th of last month and applied for mediation with the National Labor Relations Commission.
At the second mediation meeting held on the 3rd, the National Labor Relations Commission decided to suspend mediation. Accordingly, the union converted the joint bargaining team into the joint struggle headquarters and began procedures to secure the right to strike.
