Samsung Display said on the 26th that an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) with Flex Magic Pixel (FMP) passed the "Privacy Display" evaluation by UL Solutions, a global safety and science certification organization.
The technology was installed in Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S26 Ultra unveiled on the day. Samsung Electronics emphasized that the panel itself can block side viewing angles without a separate protective film.
The core is "clear from the front, blocked from the side." UL Solutions tilted the panel 45 degrees and 60 degrees, then rotated it 360 degrees to measure the brightness reduction rate.
Assuming front brightness is 100, it fell to 3.5% at 45 degrees and 0.9% or less at 60 degrees. It means it gets as dark as about one-thirtieth or one-hundredth compared with the front.
The privacy display applied to the Galaxy S26 Ultra can be turned on and off in settings. It can also be set to activate automatically only in specific situations, such as in financial apps or on message screens.
Previously, a separate privacy film had to be attached. However, films have the drawback of always lowering screen brightness.
FMP controls the viewing angle through the panel structure itself. When the function is turned off, it can be used bright and clear like a regular OLED.
The amount of information that changes by angle is thanks to the "multi-shielding structure."
OLEDs have a black matrix (BM) structure that separates red, green, and blue (RGB) pixels. Samsung Display precisely arranged this structure in multiple layers to control the diffusion of light. It is a method of adjusting the direction of light at the pixel level.
It also combined LEAD, a non-polarizer OLED technology with high brightness and low power characteristics. The advanced version of this technology was named LEAD 2.0.
Lee Ho-jung, vice president and head of product planning for the small and medium-sized display business at Samsung Display, said, "LEAD 2.0 is a technology that simultaneously achieves all-direction view blocking and power efficiency," adding, "We have secured both security and efficiency needed in the on-device artificial intelligence (AI) era."
Samsung Display will operate an exhibition space to experience the technology at MWC26, which opens in Barcelona, Spain, on Feb. 2.
