SK hynix disclosed on the 25th that it will execute an additional 2.16081 trillion won in investment by Dec. 31, 2030, for construction of Phase-1 fabs (production facilities) at the Yongin semiconductor cluster. The total investment for Phase-1 fab construction has increased to 3 trillion won. The company said equipment installation will be executed separately from this investment.
The Phase-1 fabs at the Yongin semiconductor cluster are being built in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, reaching the height of a 50-story apartment building. Regarding this investment, the company said it is "a strategic decision to proactively respond to rapidly increasing global customer demand and further strengthen a stable supply system," adding, "We aim to expand production capacity early and lay the groundwork to reliably supply products when customers need them."
With the spread of advanced industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), data centers and high-performance computing, demand for high-performance, high-integration semiconductors is structurally expanding. The company said it is making large-scale investments to respond to this medium- to long-term demand and accelerate technology development.
Under the National Advanced Strategic Industry Act, the floor area ratio for industrial complexes where corporations with strategic technologies are located has been eased to up to 1.4 times the legal cap. Accordingly, the cleanroom area to be set up in the Phase-1 fabs at the Yongin semiconductor cluster by SK hynix has also been expanded.
Phase-1 fabs consist of two structural frames and six cleanrooms. SK hynix plans to open the cleanrooms early and begin full-scale customer engagement. This investment will be used to complete the frame construction of the Phase-1 fabs and build all cleanrooms from Phase 2 to Phase 6.
SK hynix plans to accelerate building a mutually beneficial ecosystem with about 50 partner companies in the cluster, using this investment as a starting point. The company said, "We expect the cleanroom opening timeline to be moved up from May 2027 to February of the same year," adding, "In line with this early operation readiness, we will establish practical operating systems in a timely manner to respond swiftly to future demand."
