Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on the 21st that SK hynix appears to have reviewed a plan to build a memory chip production plant in Japan.
Nikkei said SK hynix appears to have sounded out some local governments on candidate sites for building a DRAM plant, on the premise of Japanese government subsidies.
The outlet noted that SK hynix's site review does not appear to have made significant progress, adding, "Discussions with the Japanese government are ongoing, but it is unclear at this point whether the plan will be realized."
However, Nikkei reported that SK hynix denied any plan to expand its memory chip base into Japan, saying, "We have never reviewed the matter."
The paper said Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, suggested the possibility of entering Japan, noting that in a company interview in 2024, he said, "We are examining whether production is possible in other countries such as Japan or the United States."
