Online game platform Roblox deleted the game "The National Assembly of That Day," which sparked controversy for distorting the Dec. 3 martial law, citing a community rules violation. The game drew criticism because users take on the role of martial law troops or police and shoot at citizens trying to enter the National Assembly.
Roblox said on the 20th that it "reviewed the 'The National Assembly of That Day' experience and removed it."
Posted on the platform earlier this month, the game was designed for users to perform roles such as martial law troops and police against the backdrop of the Dec. 3 martial law situation. In particular, it proceeded by opening fire on users playing citizens, drawing criticism for distorting a historical event.
Roblox cited its community rules that ban discussion and depiction of content related to political figures or groups. It added that content related to political candidates currently running for public office or who recently ran, related slogans and election campaign materials, and rallies and events is also prohibited.
It added that it is "committed to creating an environment where users of all ages can have safe, civic-minded, and positive experiences."
Right after the deletion the previous day, the game operator went live on a Discord channel and criticized domestic media that reported on the matter. However, in a notice on the 20th, the operator said, "Effective now, we are officially ending the service," adding, "We are not ending it out of fear of legal disputes; it is a decision to leap to a new game."
On Roblox in 2024, "That Day in Gwangju," which distorted the May 18 Democratization Movement, was also posted and sparked controversy. At the time, the May 18 Memorial Foundation filed a complaint against the creator, and Roblox released an apology and deleted the game.
