The decentralized AI (DeAI) infrastructure project Sentient said on the 19th that it officially launched the non-profit Sentient Foundation to ensure the open-sourcing of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and prevent harms from technological monopolies.
The foundation said this is part of a shift in the rapidly changing artificial intelligence (AI) market from closed to open after the "DeepSeek shock" last year.
A foundation official said, "With the launch of DeepSeek's next model, V4, imminent, we will establish safety guidelines and support researchers worldwide to prevent advanced technology from becoming the exclusive property of particular forces," adding, "We will play a role like the 'UN' in the AI field."
Sentient Labs, the technology development organization, is a research institute that develops innovative reasoning technologies such as the ROMA framework, and the Sentient Foundation serves as a watchdog to ensure that the technology does not degenerate into the private interests or money-making tools of specific corporations and to maintain its public character.
Sachi Kamiya, head of the Sentient Foundation, said, "Just as Linux became the open backbone of the internet, it is time for open-source AGI to become the core infrastructure of human progress," adding, "The foundation will coordinate a transparent and fair governance structure so AGI does not fall under the control of a single organization."
The foundation also expressed expectations for the Korean market. A foundation official said, "We expect Korea's open-source talent to play a leading role in the process of establishing global AGI standards."
The Sentient Foundation plans to spread the social recognition of the need for open-source AI and establish governance standards for responsible AI development through global forums such as the Open AGI Summit.
