OpenAI has expanded its San Francisco headquarters and appears to be strengthening its security system by gathering core artificial intelligence (AI) researchers in a single building.
According to the industry on the 19th, OpenAI secured a new office on Terry A. Francois Boulevard about 200 meters from its existing headquarters and placed researchers handling core algorithms there. The building, with a total floor area of about 29,000 square meters, was named "MB0," following the existing "MB1" and "MB2."
Recently, job postings seeking staff to operate the MB0 cafeteria and lounge were posted on LinkedIn, and a notice indicating ongoing construction has been put up outside the building.
OpenAI's move to physically bring researchers together is seen as an effort to boost collaboration efficiency while strengthening the protection of confidential information. In 2023, the company's internal network was hacked, and some AI design-related information was leaked. At the time, core models and algorithms were protected, but concerns were raised about security vulnerabilities.
OpenAI leased the entire MB0 building in Sep. 2024 and is said to have carried out interior remodeling and built security systems over the following year. It was the largest lease deal in San Francisco that year.
In addition, it is negotiating to lease an additional building of about 23,000 square meters. If the deal is completed, OpenAI will operate a large-scale AI campus totaling 93,000 square meters in San Francisco.
