China's TCL overtook Samsung Electronics in December of last year to rank No. 1 in global TV market share, according to a survey.
According to Counterpoint Research's monthly analysis of the TV market on the 19th, TCL took first place with a 16% share of the global TV market in December of last year based on shipments. Compared with December 2024, its share rose by 1.6 percentage points. With sales increasing in China, the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa, shipments during this period were analyzed to have increased 10% year over year.
Samsung Electronics' market share in December of last year was tallied at 13%. While shipments themselves increased 8% year over year, its share fell 4 percentage points from the previous month, placing it second. Counterpoint Research analyzed that shipments grew year over year in North and South America, but declined sharply in Western Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. However, Samsung Electronics maintained the lead for the whole fourth quarter of last year as shipments increased 2% from a year earlier. It also ranked No. 1 in market share from January to November of last year.
China's Hisense ranked third. The corporations' TV shipments last year fell 23% from a year earlier, but it maintained the top spot in the China market.
Bob O'Brien, a director at Counterpoint Research, said, "TCL has been expanding its share for months, and a year-end surge in shipments allowed it to overtake Samsung Electronics," adding, "Although it is a one-month performance, TCL continues to show year-over-year shipment growth while Samsung Electronics has been flat." He added, "If TCL gradually strengthens its position in the premium segment through cooperation with Sony, it could pose a greater competitive threat to Samsung Electronics going forward."
