On the 10th, Google and YouTube marked Safer Internet Day by announcing five AI safety learning rules for students and parents. Google said it focused on using AI as an effective educational tool while minimizing potential risks that can arise online.
The five rules released that day include setting digital use rules—such as using Family Link to manage children's device screen time, set content filters, and apply class time mode—and maintaining ongoing interest in children's digital activities. Using the learning guide for Google's AI model Gemini, it suggested strengthening critical thinking skills that value the process over the correct answer.
They also include forming a "fact-checking habit" to identify AI-generated content and deepfakes and verify information, and establishing proper digital citizenship.
YouTube also shared three key tips for healthy viewing habits for teenagers.
Key points include setting usage rules that fit the family situation, such as managing children's Shorts viewing time; prioritizing age-appropriate content; and maintaining clear separation of accounts for management.
Regarding the rules, Google said, "They will help the whole family focus on learning more safely and effectively in the AI era."
