According to the supra-enterprise labor union's Samsung Electronics chapter on the 29th, as of this afternoon the number of members surpassed 62,600, exceeding 62,500, the majority-union threshold claimed by the union.
The supra-enterprise union said it plans to send an official document to management on the morning of the 30th to begin formal procedures to obtain majority-union status. It also plans to send a document to the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) to proceed with procedures to secure "representative status for workers."
As of Dec. 31, 2025, the last day of last year, the supra-enterprise union had 50,853 members, and in less than a month the number surged by nearly 12,000.
The supra-enterprise union estimates the threshold for becoming a majority union at 62,500 members, taking into account the number of eligible members.
However, the exact criteria for establishing a majority union may change depending on future verification procedures.
As of the end of June last year, Samsung Electronics had a total of 129,524 employees (including 599 fixed-term workers), and some interpret that more than about 64,500 members would be needed to establish majority-union status.
If the supra-enterprise union secures majority-union status, it will legally gain the status of bargaining representative and be able to exercise the right to collective bargaining and to determine working conditions on its own. Samsung Electronics formed its first union in 2018, but since then has had multiple unions and no single majority union.
A supra-enterprise union official said, "We are coordinating the timing for sending an official document to ask management to carry out procedures to verify that a majority has been achieved."
