The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) held the first briefing for the independent AI foundation model project on the 30th at the COEX Auditorium.
At the event, five elite teams (Naver Cloud, Upstage, SKT, NC AI, LG AI Research Institute) attended and released the first results of the independent AI foundation model project they have developed so far. About 1,000 people, including key stakeholders and experts in the AI industry and members of the public, gathered at the event, showing strong interest in the future and development direction of Korea's AI ecosystem.
Bae Kyung-hoon, vice minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said in congratulatory remarks that "all elite teams that devoted themselves to AI model development are winners," and emphasized that "this challenge will be an important driving force for Korea to leap forward as an AI powerhouse." Ha Jung-woo, senior secretary for AI future planning at the presidential office, said, "We will actively support the development of AI models at a global level and the creation of an AI industry ecosystem," while Lim Moon-young, standing vice chair of the National AI Strategy Committee, said this first briefing is only the beginning and expressed confidence that the spirit of challenge and achievements of Korea's AI industry will be fully realized.
In addition to the development outcomes of the AI models, the event also shared concrete action plans to lay the foundation for "AX (AI transition)" across model advancement and the broader AI industry going forward, and participants showed great interest in the technical results released by the elite teams. In addition, a booth was set up in the lobby where visitors could experience the AI models firsthand, energizing the venue as a forum for communication where a variety of attendees took part and exchanged views.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to review the results of this briefing through the first-stage evaluation in Jan. and announce sustainable policies and strategies for the future development of the AI industry.
