In Ireland, the European data center hub, Korean corporations are pushing to enter the eco-friendly artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure market by validating container-type modular data center (MDC) technology through local demonstrations. Ireland is strengthening requirements for data center permits by tying them to renewable energy and applying high-efficiency, energy-saving technologies.
According to the industry on the 25th, renewable energy and data center developer Rumclune Energy is pursuing plans for a data center complex with a total capacity of 250MW, and is said to be considering introducing a Korea-style MDC for a 50MW section. Rumclune Energy Korea and a Korean consortium are discussing a 1MW proof of concept (PoC), and based on the results, they are expected to decide whether to fully introduce it within the complex.
The consortium includes Rumclune Energy Korea, iA Cloud (virtualization/operations platform), Databean (immersion cooling), and CarbonSaurus (energy/carbon monitoring). IDB (AIOps autonomous operations) and Synergy (ESS/VPP power solutions) are also joining to advance an integrated model of MDC and an intelligent energy management system (IEMS).
On the 15th of Nov., the expanded consortium visited Ireland for collaboration meetings and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for joint research after the PoC. Enterprise Ireland expressed its intention to support participation in EU research programs and local dissemination, and the consortium is pursuing a joint proposal for the Horizon Europe Innovation Action project, with a deadline in Feb. 2026.
Amid surging AI demand that has intensified power and carbon issues, this demonstration is expected to be the first case to assess the commercialization potential of a European high-efficiency data center model by combining renewable power with Korea-style cooling and operations technologies. The project is part of the overseas expansion support program for data center equipment and software supported by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) in 2025.
