Samsung Electronics is riding a wave of success at home and abroad with the Galaxy Z Tri-Fold, a foldable phone that folds twice. Samsung Electronics is said to be maintaining a cautious stance on producing additional units. Analysts say the product's cost is so high that expanding sales will not immediately lead to improved profitability.
According to the industry on the 25th, the Galaxy Z Tri-Fold sold through local carrier e& Group in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) sold out on launch day. The initial sales volume was reportedly 500 units. In the UAE, the Tri-Fold is priced at 11,999 dirhams (about 4.73 million won), more than 1 million won higher than the domestic price (3.5904 million won), but it was said to have sold out within minutes of sales opening. In Korea, all prepared units sold out on the 12th, the day of launch, and the second restock on the 17th also sold out again.
The Tri-Fold is regarded as having the largest display and the thinnest profile among the Galaxy Z Fold series to date. When folded, it is 12.9 mm thick, and when unfolded, the thinnest side is 3.9 mm. Unfolded, it can be used like a tablet with a 10-inch (253 mm) screen, and when folded, it secures portability with a 6.5-inch (164.8 mm) form factor like the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
However, the prevailing view is that the Tri-Fold's contribution to the Mobile eXperience (MX) division's results will be limited. From the development stage, it strongly carried the character of a "strategic smartphone" meant to showcase technology, meaning expanding sales is not the primary goal. Because it requires complex processes—such as three panels and a "dual infolding" structure that folds inward twice, and the application of the Armor Flex Hinge to reinforce durability—the cost burden is high, and some assess that in Korea the price is set at a level where "practically no margin remains even if it sells."
