Korea-based game developer Supercat has finalized an agreement with Nexon concerning the termination of the publishing contract for "The Kingdom of the Winds 2" and decided to maintain their existing shareholder relationship and partnership. Supercat plans to use this as an opportunity to focus its capabilities on developing its own intellectual property (IP) and strengthening its business competitiveness.
Supercat said on the 23rd that it had agreed with Nexon on the direction of cooperation after the publishing contract was terminated, and that Nexon would continue a cooperative relationship befitting its status as an investor and shareholder.
Accordingly, Supercat's strategy is to focus on game development centered on its own IP and preparing its next titles rather than relying on external IP. The company said the decision was a strategic judgment made with a view to enhancing corporate value through future new releases.
A Supercat official said, "We will devote all our capabilities to providing users with diverse and innovative game experiences that reflect our own unique identity."
Cooperation between Nexon and Supercat began in 2018 when Nexon made a strategic investment in Supercat. In 2020, they released the mobile MMORPG "The Kingdom of the Winds: Yeon," developed by Supercat, and in 2022, Nexon additionally purchased Supercat equity, increasing its stake to 19%.
The two companies later signed a publishing contract for "The Kingdom of the Winds 2," but after key developers left, the development schedule was delayed and the "Hwanse Chuihojeon Online" project was canceled, leading them to terminate the contract in April.
