Samsung Electronics said on the 21st it will unveil a new Bespoke AI Refrigerator model next month equipped with Google's latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, "Gemini."
The company said it improved food recognition performance by combining Gemini with the AI Vision feature, which recognizes ingredients through an internal refrigerator camera. Previously, foods that could be automatically recognized when putting ingredients in or taking them out of the refrigerator were limited to 37 types of fresh food and up to 50 types of processed and packaged food, but with Gemini introduced, the range of recognizable items has become much broader.
A feature has also been added that recognizes what users write on labels on containers holding food and automatically registers it to the grocery list.
The company will also introduce the AI Food Manager feature, which provides a dining experience that spans ingredient recognition and management, recipe recommendations, and ingredient shopping. AI Food Manager analyzes how users operate the refrigerator and helps manage ingredients more efficiently by sending alerts for items that need to be purchased, recommending recipes, and providing ingredient usage reports.
Samsung Electronics will also expand the AI Vision combined with Gemini to wine refrigerators. To make it easier to manage wine, which requires systematic long-term care, it plans to launch a new AI Wine Manager feature based on SmartThings.
AI Wine Manager recognizes wine bottles through an internal camera at the top of the appliance when wine is placed in the wine refrigerator, and automatically records detailed information such as name, classification, variety, and vintage to a list.
It also tells users where the wine is stored inside the refrigerator so they can find it easily. When the storage location is changed or a bottle is removed, it recognizes the change and updates the list in real time.
Samsung Electronics plans to equip the more powerful AI Vision feature in the Bespoke AI Family Hub, Bespoke AI Hybrid, and INFINITE AI Wine Refrigerator, which are scheduled for release next year.
Moon Jong-seung, vice president of Samsung Electronics' Digital Appliances Division, said, "Samsung Electronics has led innovation in kitchen appliances with AI Vision technology," adding, "Through the further evolved AI Vision, made possible by this collaboration with Google, we will provide a differentiated food experience unique to Samsung."
