ChatGPT surpassed $3 billion (about 4.4 trillion won) in cumulative consumer spending in the mobile app market 31 months after its launch.
U.S. IT outlet TechCrunch, citing data from mobile market analyst Appfigures, reported on the 18th (local time) that consumers using Apple iOS and Android devices spent $2.48 billion (about 3.66 trillion won) in the ChatGPT app this year.
That is about a 408% increase from last year's spending ($487 million). Compared with the $42.9 million spent in 2023 (May–Dec.), it grew 1,036%. Most of the expenditure occurred this year.
As a result, cumulative spending since 2023, when the ChatGPT app first launched, has exceeded $3 billion, and the pace is faster than other popular apps, TechCrunch said. For comparison, the online video service (OTT) Disney+ took 42 months to reach $3 billion in cumulative spending, while HBO Max and TikTok took 46 months and 58 months, respectively.
However, the tally includes only payments made through mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs, and does not include direct payments via websites.
Among artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, TechCrunch said Grok from xAI, led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, showed a consumer spending growth trend similar to ChatGPT.
