The industry's first camera standard based on Matter 1.5 will be applied to Samsung Electronics' smart home platform SmartThings. Matter is a global smart home consolidation standard established by the private standards group CSA to expand interoperability among devices.
Samsung Electronics said on the 19th that with cameras added to the existing lineup of Matter-based lights, door locks, switches, and various sensors in SmartThings, it now supports the widest range of Matter devices among smart home platforms. The company plans to roll out updates applying Matter 1.5, which CSA released in Nov., to SmartThings in stages starting in late Dec.
Cameras play a key role in a smart home setup. By consolidating a camera with SmartThings, users can build a safer and more convenient smart home. When the user is away, they can monitor conditions in and around the home and check on pets' well-being to take action remotely.
The Matter 1.5 camera standard supports cameras for various uses, including indoor and outdoor security and video doorbells. ▲ Live video playback ▲ Two-way talk ▲ Motion detection alerts ▲ Event video storage ▲ Pan, tilt, and zoom control, and other convenience features are included.
With this update, camera manufacturers can release cameras that can be consolidated with SmartThings based on the Matter software development kit (SDK) without having to conform to separate application programming interfaces (APIs).
Samsung Electronics has supported the use of various smart home camera devices by collaborating with Internet of Things (IoT) device makers such as Aqara, Arlo, Hue, and Ring. It is working with Aqara, Eve, and UltiCam on cameras based on the Matter standard. These cameras are slated to be released sequentially around Mar. next year.
Samsung Electronics is developing SmartThings as an open platform. Through its SmartThings certification program, WWST, it supports more than 390 partners worldwide and more than 4,700 devices. The company plans to showcase this smart home ecosystem at CES 2026, the world's largest IT and home appliance trade show, to be held in Las Vegas in Jan. next year.
Jeong Jae-yeon, vice president of the Samsung Electronics AI Platform Center, said, "SmartThings provides customers with a consistent and integrated experience by consolidation of products and services across various brands and protocols," and added, "To drive such customer experience innovation, we will continue to expand collaboration on industry standards, including Matter."
