Industry-specialized artificial intelligence (AI) corporations MakinaRocks said on the 18th that it won a contract for the project titled "development of an intelligent GOP operations support system based on the defense-specialized AI platform (hereinafter K-AIP)."
This project is an exclusive support task for the Defense Industry Innovation Corporations 100, with a total budget of about 4.4 billion won and a project period of 35 months through Oct. 2028. MakinaRocks will serve as the lead corporation, and the Korea National Defense University, Korea Military Academy, and Inha University will participate as joint research and development institutions.
MakinaRocks said, "This project aims to shift GOP operations, which have relied on human experience and judgment, to a structure in which AI provides real-time support." Currently, GOP (forward observation and security operations area) operations are run in a way that, when a situation occurs, people directly check various pieces of information, make judgments, and respond. In this process, checking the status of friendly forces and equipment available for use and selecting response measures are handled manually, causing delays and reduced accuracy.
Based on its proprietary AI platform Runway, MakinaRocks will build a platform that can quickly analyze and learn from diverse unstructured data generated on the battlefield, implement it as AI models, and rapidly deploy them to the field.
The defense-specialized AI platform based on Runway securely collects and consolidation unstructured battlefield data scattered across multiple formats—such as surveillance camera footage, radio voice, and situation report documents—and provides the foundation to apply the latest AI models and technologies quickly and reliably in defense environments.
On this platform, AI models specialized for military operations will be developed, including a "battlefield situation awareness model" that detects abnormal signs of the enemy and a "response plan recommendation model" that proposes response options suited to the situation, MakinaRocks said. The developed models will be deployed to the field in the form of an intelligent GOP operations support system application to assist commanders' decision-making in real time.
Through this, commanders will be able to carry out the operations process—"observe-orient-decide-act" (OODA Loop)—more quickly and efficiently, and the repetitive judgment burden that military experts have handled manually is expected to be greatly reduced.
Yoon Seong-ho, CEO of MakinaRocks, said, "AI will now become core infrastructure that determines the speed of judgment on the battlefield and the course of combat," adding, "Starting with building this intelligent GOP operations support system, we will implement a defense-specialized AI platform-based decision-making system that can expand to border areas, urban environments, and even irregular warfare."
