LG Innotek said on the 18th it has developed a "next-generation under-display camera module" (next-generation UDC) that is mounted behind the vehicle's instrument cluster to monitor the driver.
UDC is a component that makes up the driver monitoring system (DMS), integrating in-cabin cameras and software (SW), and is used to detect the driver's condition in real time, including forward attention.
LG Innotek, in collaboration with LG Display, developed the "next-generation UDC" that eliminates the chronic problem of image quality degradation in UDCs after more than a year of research and development.
This product applies a self-developed "artificial intelligence (AI) image quality restoration software" to fully recover degraded image quality. The company said it delivers an image quality at a level equivalent to 99% or more compared with footage shot without a display.
LG Innotek said that unlike conventional DMS cameras, which were protrusively installed on the dashboard or above the steering device, it is completely hidden behind the instrument cluster, increasing design freedom. As a result, adoption is expected to grow, especially among high-end models.
LG Innotek plans to continue enhancing the performance of the next-generation UDC and expand its functions, from occupant recognition to supporting personalized convenience features.
With the development of the next-generation UDC, LG Innotek has further strengthened its lineup of Autonomous Driving sensing solutions that cover both the interior and exterior of vehicles.
The next-generation UDC is scheduled to be unveiled for the first time at CES 2026, the world's largest home appliance and IT exhibition, to be held in Las Vegas in January next year.
