The Personal Information Protection Commission said on the 18th it will grant "privacy by design (PbD) certification" to three outstanding products that faithfully reflect personal information protection features.
PbD is a design concept that prevents personal information infringements in advance by fully considering personal information protection factors throughout the entire lifecycle of a product or service, including planning, manufacturing and disposal. The Personal Information Protection Commission has been piloting the PbD certification system since 2023 and awarded certificates to a total of four products through last year.
The products certified this time are three in total: ▲ Truen's home camera IGLOO (EGLOO) S8 ▲ Samsung Electronics' home service robot Ballie ▲ LG Electronics' robot vacuum.
These products were evaluated as implementing the core principles of PbD by embedding advance prevention measures against personal information infringement from the design stage and faithfully reflecting legal requirements such as the Personal Information Protection Act.
Yang Cheong-sam, director general for personal information policy at the Personal Information Protection Commission, said, "To respond effectively to the rapidly spreading smart device environment, it is more important than anything else to shift the personal information protection framework from ex post measures to a focus on prevention," adding, "Starting next year, we will expand the certification scope beyond IT products to the solutions sector, and we will push ahead swiftly with legislating PbD certification through amendments to the Personal Information Protection Act."
