Samsung Electronics' twice-folding smartphone "Galaxy Z Trifold" sold out both online and offline upon release despite a price nearing 3.6 million won. The product will be restocked at 10 a.m. on the 17th.
According to the industry on the 16th, Samsung Electronics will accept purchase requests for the Galaxy Z Trifold at 10 a.m. on the 17th through Samsung.com online and designated Samsung Electronics offline stores. Buyers can pick up the product the same day at designated Samsung offline stores or have it delivered within two to three days.
The list price of the Galaxy Z Trifold is 3,590,400 won. The Galaxy Z Trifold sold out immediately after its official release on the 12th at online and offline stores. In particular, on Samsung.com, all prepared stock sold out five minutes after sales began.
The industry estimates the initial sales volume of the Galaxy Z Trifold at around 3,000 units. Samsung Electronics sold the product only as an unlocked device without carrier tie-ins. The buzz around Samsung Electronics' first twice-folding form factor and the scarcity due to limited inventory combined to trigger a sellout frenzy.
On used transaction platforms, it is trading at a premium. Going rates are in the 3.7 million to 5 million won range. Posts offering a 10 million won price have also appeared.
From Samsung Electronics' perspective, it is a dilemma. The Z Trifold carries high production and repair expense, but with the company setting the price in the mid-3 million won range, some say the margin is thin. An industry official said, "Considering that the once-folding 'Galaxy Z Fold7' launched at 2.37 million won, the Galaxy Z Trifold is cheaper than expected."
When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Trifold becomes a tablet-class large screen at 10 inches (253 mm), and when folded, it turns into a 6.5-inch (164.8 mm) bar-type screen identical to the "Galaxy Z Fold7." Its thickness is 12.9 mm when folded, and the thinnest part is 3.9 mm when unfolded. It also includes a protection feature that alerts users with notifications and vibrations if any abnormality is detected during folding.
The key components are top-tier. It features the "Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy" and a 200-megapixel wide-angle camera to support high-performance computing and pro-level shooting. The battery is the largest among Galaxy foldables at 5,600 mAh, with three-cell batteries placed in each of the three panels to distribute power delivery. It also supports up to 45W wired superfast charging.
The hinge uses the new "Armor Flex Hinge" and titanium material. The left and right hinges are designed with a symmetrical dual-rail structure to evenly distribute the force exerted on the panels when folding and unfolding. "Advanced Armor Aluminum" is applied to the frame, "Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2" to the front, and a special glass-fiber composite material to the back to minimize weight gain while enhancing durability.
For the first time on a Galaxy smartphone, it also supports the tablet version of "Samsung DeX." Without an external monitor, the device alone can create a PC-like work environment, and users can create up to four virtual workspaces and run up to five apps simultaneously in each space.
