The outline of the Chairperson and Commissioners who will form the fourth Samsung Compliance Committee is expected to come out this month. The term of the third Samsung Compliance Committee ends in Feb. next year.
According to the business community on the 16th, the boards of the seven Samsung affiliates under the Compliance Committee—Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDI, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance—will begin reviewing agenda items to appoint the next Compliance Committee Chairperson and Commissioners this month. Lee Chan-hee is widely seen as likely to be reappointed as Samsung Compliance Committee Chairperson.
Each board meeting to be held in Jan. next year is expected to approve the formal appointment agenda. The term of the fourth Compliance Committee runs from Feb. next year to Feb. 2028.
Chairperson Lee took the helm of the second Compliance Committee launched in Feb. 2022. After being reappointed in Feb. last year, Lee has also been serving as the third Chairperson. If reappointed again this time, Lee will lead the Samsung Compliance Committee for six years.
Before the regular meeting of the third Compliance Committee held that day at the Samsung Life Insurance Seocho building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, Chairperson Lee met with reporters and said, "If there is a request from the company for (another term), I am personally considering accepting it."
Chairperson Lee made Samsung's governance restructuring a core task in the second Compliance Committee. Specifically, Lee selected establishing human rights-first management, settling transparent and fair management, and practicing environmental, social and governance (ESG) management as key priorities. In the third Compliance Committee, Lee focused on strengthening Samsung's compliance management around issues such as reviving the group control tower and improving governance.
Chairperson Lee has repeatedly stressed the need for Samsung Electronics Chair Lee Jae-yong to return as a registered director. Earlier, Lee said, "From the perspective of responsible management, many Compliance Committee Commissioners share the view that (Chair Lee) should return as a registered director," adding, "Personally, I am thinking of an early return as a registered executive."
