Korea's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot market has undergone seismic shifts over the past three weeks. While OpenAI's ChatGPT continues to dominate the domestic AI market, Google quickly surged by rolling out its new AI model "Gemini 3," but Perplexity users have declined sharply.
According to app analytics platform Mobile Index on the 14th, starting on the 17th of last month (U.S. local time), when Google released Gemini 3, the domestic AI chatbot market hit an inflection point over three weeks as Gemini users and new installs increased in tandem.
Mobile Index data shows ChatGPT, the leading AI model in Korea, logged 8,693,560 weekly active users (WAU) in the first week of the period (Nov. 17–23). In the second week (Nov. 24–30) and the following third week (Dec. 1–7), it recorded 8,800,475 WAU and 8,754,798 WAU, respectively, maintaining an overwhelming scale.
New ChatGPT installs decreased from 202,303 in the first week of the period to 196,256, then fell to 191,339 in the third week. Although it still relatively leads in new installs compared to other AI models, observers noted the three-week downtrend is notable.
Gemini, by contrast, has quickly climbed since the 17th of last month. Gemini's WAU started at 16,196 in the first week as of the 17th of last month and then surged to 22,928 the following week. In the third week, it dipped slightly to 21,305, entering a stabilization phase. Weekly new installs for Gemini reached 50,967 in the first week, then more than doubled to 111,115 the following week. It recorded 75,359 in the third week. This is seen as the result of an influx of early users driven by the unveiling of new features and promotional effects.
Perplexity, once cited as a key model in AI search, showed clear declines in both users and new installs. During the period, Perplexity users fell from 455,659 in the first week to 449,482 in the second week, then dropped to 436,480 in the third week. The slide in weekly new installs was even steeper: from 16,908 in the first week to 15,847 the next week, and then down to 12,134 the following week.
