With confirmation that LG Uplus discarded a server suspected of being hacked, the government asked the police to investigate.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on Dec. 10, a public-private joint investigation team has examined servers since October to determine the cause of the LG Uplus customer data leak and confirmed that some servers were discarded.
The Ministry of Science and ICT asked the Korean National Police Agency's Cyber Terror Response Division to investigate whether the discarded servers were intentionally destroyed during the process of demanding the submission of the servers.
Hacking suspicions have been raised since July–August. LG Uplus said on Aug. 13 that there were "no signs of a breach," but it was revealed that one account management server was physically discarded on July 31. It was also confirmed that on Aug. 12 the operating system of a server suspected of being hacked was reinstalled. LG Uplus said the server disposal had been planned a year earlier and was unrelated to any cyber intrusion.
