WEBZEN said on the 10th that it will begin producing a strategy game using the intellectual property (IP) of the popular Naver Webtoon series "I Became the Tyrant of a Defense Game."
WEBZEN signed a licensing agreement with Naver Webtoon for game services using the "I Became the Tyrant of a Defense Game" IP, and plans to have its subsidiary "WEBZEN Crevix" develop the game while WEBZEN handles publishing. The webtoon "I Became the Tyrant of a Defense Game" is based on a novel of the same name that depicts the protagonist, who single-handedly cleared a game so difficult that no one else could finish it, becoming possessed by a character inside the game and struggling to survive.
By portraying the harrowing battles experienced while becoming the game's protagonist and completing its missions, the protagonist's growth, and the relationship building with the other characters through meticulous storytelling and detailed emotional descriptions, both the novel and the webtoon have built a large and loyal fan base.
WEBZEN secured the rights to produce and service a game based on the webtoon IP through this agreement. Its subsidiary "WEBZEN Crevix" is developing it as a hybrid genre that combines tower defense and dungeon offense based on Unreal Engine 5, and WEBZEN will operate the game service in Korea and overseas.
Adopting refined 2.5D art visuals based on dot graphics, the team is designing the original webtoon's backgrounds and characters, and plans to add original planning elements and systems during development to target domestic and global markets with differentiated gameplay from existing titles.
