Cybersecurity and cloud corporations Akamai Technologies said on the 10th that it acquired Fermyon.
Fermyon is a startup with function-as-a-service (FaaS) technology based on WebAssembly. Akamai said Fermyon's FaaS technology has become important as artificial intelligence (AI) inference moves to the edge environment. By combining this technology with Akamai's globally distributed platform, corporations will be able to build edge-native applications that improve performance and reduce expense compared with existing Cloud-Native applications.
Adam Karon, Akamai cloud technology group chief operating officer (COO) and general manager, said, "Combining Fermyon's FaaS capabilities with Akamai's cloud will allow developers to innovatively implement and run lightweight code much more easily at the edge," adding, "Akamai is expanding the compute domain from core data centers to the internet edge, and this technology will offer developers a wide range of development and deployment options across Cloud-Native and serverless environments."
