The Presidential Committee on AI said on the 24th it will form a public-private task force (TF) to flesh out a bilateral artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation plan arranged on the occasion of President Lee Jae-myung's state visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The TF will be jointly led by the senior secretary for AI future planning and a vice chair of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and will focus on laying the groundwork to execute a joint growth strategy in AI between the two countries.

At the Government Complex Seoul on the day, the committee unveiled an implementation framework at the "1st meeting of ministers related to science and technology" to expand cooperation outcomes with the UAE into tangible investments and joint projects. The committee said it will present specific public-private cooperation projects within this year.

The TF will consist of five working groups in total, each run under the lead of relevant ministries such as the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE). Each ministry will set up a working group that includes private corporations and experts and will derive detailed areas of cooperation to be discussed with the UAE side. On the Korea side, in-person consultations will be pursued with G42, the core corporation of the UAE AI industry, and MGX, an investment institution specializing in AI and advanced technology, to accelerate the identification of joint projects.

The government also plans to boost technology development and personnel exchanges by linking MBZUAI, the UAE's AI-specialized graduate school, and the research institution ATRC with domestic universities and research institutes. It added that, in particular, it will support startups that find it difficult to commercialize in certain industries such as healthcare and finance due to domestic regulation so they can seek growth opportunities in the UAE.
