LG Electronics said on the 20th that it signed a patent license agreement with Amazon for the use of Wi-Fi standard-essential patents (SEPs).
Under the agreement, Amazon received a license to use LG Electronics' Wi-Fi standard patents in devices that use Wi-Fi technology, including the Alexa AI speaker, the Amazon Fire TV Stick streaming device, and Fire tablets.
LG Electronics said it is also negotiating patent license agreements on Wi-Fi standard-essential patents with numerous global corporations that use Wi-Fi standard technology, in addition to Amazon.
Standard-essential patents refer to core patents that must be used to comply with international standards that every product using the technology must meet. Once the technology is adopted as an international standard in the relevant industry, all corporations develop products based on it.
Jo Huijae, head of the LG Electronics IP Center (vice president), said, "This agreement is proof of LG Electronics' Wi-Fi standard patent capabilities in the global market," adding, "We will continue to lead global technological innovation based on world-class patent competitiveness."
