The government will ease the monthly payment limit for web board games such as hwatu and poker from the current 700,000 won to 1 million won.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the 20th gave advance notice of legislation for a proposed amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Game Industry Promotion Act with these details. The main point is to raise to 1 million won the one-month purchase limit per game user for virtual cash and game items used to access games.
Under the current Enforcement Decree of the Game Industry Promotion Act, for outcome-prediction games that simulate betting or dividends, such as cards, hwatu, and sports, the limit per user on game money and items purchasable in one month is 700,000 won.
Introduced in 2014, web board game regulations are a sunset regulation that set limits on payments and betting to address illegal cash-out issues in games such as go-stop and poker. In 2022, the monthly payment limit for web board games was raised once from 500,000 won to 700,000 won, and this time the payment limit was further eased.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) will collect opinions from institutions, organizations, and individuals through Dec. 30, conduct a comprehensive review, and then make a final decision on whether to finalize the Enforcement Decree and its specific details.
