The Ministry of Science and ICT said it opened the "AI semiconductor innovation lab" on the 18th at the Semiconductor Hall on the Natural Sciences Campus of Sungkyunkwan University with the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP).
Sungkyunkwan University's AI semiconductor innovation lab is the second innovation lab, following Yonsei University's innovation lab on Sept. 17. The AI semiconductor innovation lab is a project that, centered on industry-academia cooperation bringing together the capabilities of Korea's corporations and universities in the AI semiconductor field, operates research and education programs grounded in industrial worksites to train practice-ready talent who can be deployed to industry immediately.
Sungkyunkwan University's AI semiconductor innovation lab formed four research centers under it—△ NPU core △ NPU infrastructure △ physical AI △ AI computing platform—to develop On-device AI semiconductors, hardware (HW) and software (SW) technologies, and to cultivate talent. At each center, Mobilint, Openedges Technology, Boss Semiconductor, and Samsung Electronics are participating as partner corporations, with research teams, employees of partner corporations, and master's and doctoral students conducting joint research and running corporate dispatch and training programs.
Park Tae-wan, director general for information and communications industry policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "To lead the competition in high-performance, low-power AI Semiconductor technologies, we must fully marshal the research and development capabilities of corporations and universities," and added, "We will spare no support so that Sungkyunkwan University's AI semiconductor innovation lab can take root as a cradle for nurturing innovative talent and a hub for advanced technology development."
