Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, met with Jensen Huang, the Nvidia CEO, at about 5 p.m. today at the Seoul Arts Center.
Huang met privately on the 30th with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun for the so-called "AI kkanbu meeting" in Samseong-dong, Seoul, and then separately met with Chairman Chey, with whom he has already forged a deep business relationship through high bandwidth memory (HBM). SK hynix supplies Nvidia with the largest volume of high-value HBM products.
After meeting with Chairman Chey, Huang said, "SK is an important partner that helped develop artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers," adding, "Our perfect collaboration has grown Korea's semiconductor industry and, furthermore, enabled Nvidia to help Korea."
He added, "Immediate cooperation with Korea is a great honor for us, and through collaboration we can accomplish many things," explaining, "The first thing we must do is build AI infrastructure. With AI technology, we will build factories that support not only factories but also local ecosystems and startups."
He also said, "Korea has excellent technology, outstanding software capabilities, and manufacturing prowess," adding, "It is rare worldwide for a country to have all of this." He went on, "We also announced cooperation plans for AI factories and for robots and autonomous driving," adding, "This is an opportunity for Korea to lead the world in AI industry and robotics."
Initially, Chey Tae-won was also considering attending the kkanbu meeting, but it is said he could not make time as he was presiding over a summit in Gyeongju as president of the the Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
Chairman Chey, in his capacity as chair of the APEC CEO Summit, expressed thanks to CEO Jensen Huang for visiting Korea this time and was said to have discussed the AI cooperation plan released that day.
Jensen Huang arrived at Pohang Airport by chartered flight during the day, stopped by his lodging, The-K Hotel, and then headed to the APEC venue.
