OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, said on the 23rd (local time) that it acquired the Start - Up "Software Applications," which developed Sky, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based natural language interface for Apple's Mac desktop computers.
OpenAI said Sky, a Mac-only interface, uses AI to help users smoothly handle a variety of tasks, including writing, planning, coding, and work management.
OpenAI explained the background of the Software Applications acquisition by saying, "AI progress is not just about increasing intelligence, but about enabling intelligence to be exercised through an interface that understands context and the user's intent and works seamlessly." It added, "We will bring Sky's product design capabilities, which enable deep integration with macOS, to ChatGPT." The entire Sky team is expected to join OpenAI.
TechCrunch, a tech-focused outlet, assessed, "This acquisition is an important step in integrating OpenAI's advanced technology into users' daily lives and into corporate environments based on Macs."
OpenAI did not disclose specific transaction details, including the purchase price.
Software Applications is a Start - Up co-founded in 2023 by employees who left Apple, and it unveiled Sky on May. According to market research firm PitchBook, Software Applications has raised $6.5 million (about 9.4 billion won) to date. Major investors include OpenAI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Altman, Figma CEO Dylan Field, and Context Ventures.
Nick Turlay, OpenAI's vice president and head of ChatGPT product, said, "We envision a future where ChatGPT goes beyond a simple conversational tool to actually help users get work done," adding, "Sky's Mac integration will help realize OpenAI's vision of applying AI to the tools people use every day."
