The Broadcasting, Media and Communications Deliberation Commission (formerly the Korea Communications Standards Commission) said it has been unable to process reviews on broadcast fairness, illegal information, and deepfake sex-crime videos because Commissioners have not been appointed.
Choi Kwang-ho, acting secretary-general of the commission, appeared at the National Assembly's Science. ICT. Broadcasting. and Communications Committee audit on the morning of the 23rd and stated accordingly in his opening remarks.
Choi said, "Because the commission has not been fully formed, we are facing many difficulties, such as being unable to immediately process communications review cases that lead to serious harm to people's livelihoods, including programs that severely undermine the public interest and fairness of broadcast media, as well as illegal information such as gambling, drugs, and copyright infringement, and deepfake digital sex-crime videos."
The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC), the predecessor of the current commission, halted all reviews for four months starting in June as its formation was delayed. Former Chairperson Ryu Hee-rim expressed an intention to resign in April and stepped down in early June, leaving only two Commissioners. The new commission launched on the 1st, but a new Chairperson and Commissioners have not been appointed.
Choi said, "As widespread harm to the public is occurring from information on illegal weapons, drugs, illegal private loans, and copyright infringement, we ask for the special attention and cooperation of the Commissioners so that electronic deliberations can be conducted for a faster response."
He also emphasized, "We ask for the special attention and support of the Commissioners so that our commission can carry out its statutory duties, social responsibility, and role, minimize harm to the public, and do its utmost."
