Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT Bae Kyung-hoon met on the morning of the 17th with SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang and LG Uplus CEO Hong Beom-sik and asked the carriers to make their own overhaul efforts in information security to prevent hacking incidents.
The Ministry of Science and ICT said that on this day in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Minister Bae held a joint meeting that included SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang and LG Uplus CEO Hong Beom-sik, along with both companies' chief information security officers (CISO). KT CEO Kim Young-seok was reportedly excluded as an investigation into the unauthorized small-amount payment hacking incident is underway.
At the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Bae, recognizing the series of cybersecurity incidents as grave, asked for efforts to overhaul information protection to restore public trust and prevent hacking, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. He also asked for the expansion of AI services that the public can feel, investment in AI infrastructure, and support for the startup ecosystem.
Deputy Prime Minister Bae said, "As telecommunications companies operate core infrastructure used by all citizens, they bear a heavy responsibility for security and must make companywide efforts," adding, "Along with this, I hope you will also work hard to foster the national AI ecosystem."
Earlier on the 2nd, Deputy Prime Minister Bae also held a joint meeting with the CEOs and CISOs of major platform companies such as Naver, Kakao, Coupang, and Woowa Brothers and asked for information protection.
