Balmuda said on the 30th that it released the Sailing Lantern, a portable LED (light-emitting diode) lantern jointly developed with the U.K. design studio LoveFrom.
The Sailing Lantern is a modern reinterpretation of a classic nautical lantern, made with stainless steel and glass. Brightness and color temperature can be adjusted with a dial, and it is equipped with a rechargeable battery. Balmuda said, "The product is designed for lifelong use with easy maintenance, disassembly, and repair, and it can be recycled after use."
The product will be produced as a limited edition of 1,000 units worldwide, with 40 allocated to Korea. The official domestic price is 5.29 million won.
LoveFrom founder Jony Ive, formerly of Apple, said, "The Sailing Lantern combines an affection for and nostalgia for classic nautical engineering with modern technology—LED—that balances beauty and durability," adding, "You will feel a familiarity that consolidations to past nautical lanterns."
Balmuda President Terao Gen said, "When Jony first showed me the Sailing Lantern design, it felt like a time capsule," explaining that it has "a romantic look, as if the primeval glow were contained inside a stainless steel case."
