Kim Jeong-ho, a professor in the School of Electrical Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), was selected as the winner of the "7th Hanyang Baeknam Award 2025," organized by the Hanyang University Baeknam Memorial Association.
On the 12th, Hanyang University said it selected Professor Kim Jeong-ho and Park Su-gil, an honorary professor at Hanyang University (music award), as the winners of the 7th Hanyang Baeknam Award 2025.
Professor Kim is the key figure who conceived the basic concept and architecture of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), the core technology of AI semiconductors that Korea succeeded in commercializing first in the world, and established it through design. He has driven the growth of the domestic semiconductor industry, including Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, and is regarded as a world-renowned scholar in AI semiconductors.
Kim presented the "next-generation HBM roadmap (HBM4–HBM8)," leading the technology vision through 2038, and is also contributing to driving international standardization and securing technological leadership. In Feb., he received the 8th Kang Daewon Award (circuits and systems category) in recognition of his contributions to HBM technology development.
He has also published 712 papers in international journals and proceedings related to HBM over more than 30 years, won 34 best paper awards, and produced 115 master's and doctoral graduates, greatly contributing to training advanced semiconductor talent in Korea. He has worked with global big tech companies such as Google, Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla, taking the lead in promoting international technology exchange.
The Hanyang Baeknam Award was established to inherit and develop the spirit of Dr. Baeknam (Baeknam) Kim Yeon-jun (1914–2008), founder of Hanyang University, and awards a total of 1.5 billion won in prize money to the winners. The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at Hanyang University on the 16th of next month.
