The Korea Communications Commission has advised caution against potential consumer harm from false and misleading advertisements ahead of the pre-orders for Apple's upcoming 'iPhone 17.'
On the 9th, the commission stated that during the pre-order period (12th-18th) for the new device, there are concerns that some agents and sales outlets may lure customers with incorrect information about mobile phone subsidies.
The commission reported there could be cases where retailers falsely advertise on social networks (SNS), offering the latest smartphones at low prices or luring customers with misinformation regarding device subsidy conditions.
In particular, it urged caution against actions such as luring customers to unclear locations through online false and deceitful ads, non-approval online retailers opening mobile phones via internet addresses (URLs), and failing to clearly distinguish costs such as optional contract discounts and additional subsidies in the contract.
They also expressed concern over delays in fulfilling promises to provide additional subsidies to users.
To prevent such damage, buyers need to check if online retailers post and advertise online pre-approval documents, and also verify that in-person sales locations match the online ad addresses, the commission advised.
Pre-approval is a system granting activation rights to sales outlets that meet certain criteria before a mobile carrier agency establishes a transaction, with a related certification mark assigned.
The commission further urged users to thoroughly check contract details, installment terms, subsidy payment details and timings, and additional services when contracting a device online, ensuring to verify the final contract.
Users who experience harm during the process of purchasing devices or subscribing to mobile services can receive necessary support through their carrier's customer center (114) or the Information and Communication Promotion Association's mobile phone unfair practices reporting center.
